What is a Bernedoodle?
The Bernedoodle is a designer breed with a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle being its parentage. Being a relatively new breed and a hybrid of two purebreds, the Miniature Bernedoodle is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, though it is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the International Designer Canine Registry, and the Designer Breed Registry.
Teacup Bernedoodles tend to be highly intelligent, hardworking when necessary, loyal, and just a bit goofy. They are good with children and other dogs, provided they have been well socialized. It's important to exercise your mini bernedoodle and do training with them as they are very intelligent. Once they begin training, their intelligence helps them pick up commands more easily than other dogs. Mini Bernedoodles may also inherit the Bernese's apprehension around strangers, so socialization is important, especially at a young age. Micro Bernedoodles can have high energy levels and crave attention and at least moderate exercise. They do best in homes where they are not left alone for long periods of time. Tiny Bernedoodles (Micro Mini Bernedoodles, or Micro Bernedoodles) and Miniature Bernedoodles do better with apartments and smaller homes because they can fit easier, and travel easier.
Bernedoodle Breeders
While there are plenty of Bernedoodle breeders out there, we have been breeding bernedoodles for many years and always strive to have the best health and temperaments in our dogs. Bernedoodle breeders need to understand the fun intricacies of the breed and work with the puppies from birth. We implement Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) which helps puppies learn how to handle stress better throughout their lives, as well as helping them to increase in intellect having to solve problems at a young age. As breeders we also have our Mini Bernedoodles and our Tiny Bernedoodles go through Emotional Resilience Training. We absolutely love these puppies so we do everything we can to provide you with a healthy happy beautiful bernedoodle! Check out our other breeds: Teacup Goldendoodles, Teacup Labradoodles, Mini Sheepadoodles & Micro Bolonoodles.
Bernedoodle Health
Bernedoodles tend to be healthier dogs than either of their parents. Inbreeding has left many purebred dogs open to genetically inherited diseases and conditions, but cross-breeding reduces that risk. For example in instances of cancer in the Bernedoodle, there seems to be fewer cases than those of the Bernese Mountain Dog. There are, however, some conditions that Bernedoodles may be predisposed to, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, eye problems, and skin issues such as allergies and hot spots. All breeds may be affected by any number of health concerns, but the Bernedoodle is generally a healthy breed.
Teddy Bear Bernedoodles
Teddy Bear Bernedoodles are typically our F1b Bernedoodles or further generations. What makes a Teddy Bear Bernedoodle is their curly coat; where a Bernese has a straight coat, adding in the poodle makes their coats a lot more curly giving them the teddy bear look. To better understand the various sizes we have the following list.
Bernedoodle Generations
- Bernese Mountain Dog x Poodle = F1 (50% Bernese & 50% Poodle)
- F1 x F1 = F2 (50% Bernese & 50% Poodle)
- F1 x Poodle = F1B (25% Bernese & 75% Poodle)
- F1B x Poodle = F2B (12.5% Bernese & 87.5% Poodle)
- F1B x F1B = F1B (25% Bernese & 75% Poodle)
- F2 x F2 = F3 (50% Bernese & 50% Poodle)
- F3 x F3 = Multigeneration (50% Bernese & 50% Poodle)
Bernedoodle Size:
- Micro Bernedoodle: 5 to 10 pounds full grown.
- Teacup / Toy Bernedoodle: 10 to 25 pounds full grown.
- Mini Bernedoodle: 25 to 50 pounds full grown.
- Medium Bernedoodle: 50 to 75 pounds full grown.
- Standard Bernedoodle: 75-100+ pounds full grown.
Miniature Bernedoodle & Tiny Bernedoodle Coats
The Micro Mini Bernedoodle or Tiny Bernedoodle is considered a more hypoallergenic dog because of being an F1B cross and possessing more of the non-shedding poodle gene. These bernedoodles will have more of a curly coat appearance, losing some of the wavy Bernese mountain dog coat due to being 25% Bernese Mountain dog. Tiny Bernedoodles like other Bernedoodle crosses, can come in many different colors and producing many more colors than the F1 crosses due to breeding poodle color genes from both mommy and daddy.
While producing more color variations they are still categorized similar to the other crosses, consisting of a tri-color mini bernedoodle, bi-color mini bernedoodle, and a solid color miniature bernedoodle. These varying coats have their different color arrays but all are considered to be more hypoallergenic because of the additional poodle; so for anyone with allergies we definitely recommend an F1B, or F2B Toy Bernedoodle or Micro Bernedoodle.
